Chapter Twelve
âIf you wish to go with me, you must let me do this, Faustin.â
The little boy wrinkled up his face in thought, then expelled a long breath, like it was the last one in his body. âOkay.â
After discussing it with Major George and Claude, Sadie had invited Faustin to accompany her on the trip to stay with Claudeâs sister. Claude assured her Julienne would love having a child in the house again, and Sadie thought it would be good for Faustin to get out of Vichy.
But before she would allow him to go, she insisted he be treated for lice.
Faustin had argued he had no cooties on him, then scratched his head like he was a dog dislodging an entire platoon of fleas.
First, Sadie endeavored to cut Faustinâs hair. She then treated him for lice, gave him a bath, and presented him with a new set of clothes to wear. She, Britta, Alexa, and several of the others had a grand time shopping for the little boy, buying him his own toothbrush and toothpaste, a comb, a new pair of shoes since heâd outgrown the pair theyâd purchased him in the spring, three shirts and pairs of pants, as well as five sets of underwear.
Faustin was so excited about the new clothes, he hardly let her dry him off before he was pulling them on, anxious to show them off. He raced into the hotelâs dining room where Sadie spent the most time with patients and paraded down the aisle between the rows of beds on one side then up the other as the men clapped and offered the appropriate words of praise.
When Faustin stopped by Claudeâs bed, the man sat up and gave him a studying glance. âWho is this boy, doc lady? I do not think we have met.â
âItâs me, Claude! Itâs Faustin!â
âFaustin! I did not recognize you with your new clothes and shiny clean face, and trimmed hair.â Claude winked at Sadie. âWhy donât you sit here beside me and tell me what you did today.â
Sadie returned an hour later, changed into a traveling gown she hadnât worn in what seemed like ages with a hat perched at a jaunty angle on her head. The peach-hued gown made her feel feminine and pretty and young instead of old and drab and worn out.
Several of the men gaped at her like theyâd never seen her before as she breezed over to Claudeâs bed.
âAre you two ready to go?â she asked, taking Faustinâs hand as he climbed off Claudeâs bed. Claude wore a new uniform since his had been beyond saving when they brought him in. He tugged at the too-stiff collar but looked eager to be on their way.
âWe are ready, doc lady,â Claude said, glancing at Faustin.
âReady, doc lady,â the little boy repeated.
Sadie grinned. âThen letâs be to it.â She motioned to the orderlies who stood near the door to help Claude onto the stretcher they would carry, and soon, they were on their way to the train station.
